How to Become an Excellent Tarot Reader

Writer's picture: Richard KnightRichard Knight

Gone are the days of fairground fortune tellers; although, some of these Tarot readers were very talented and had a brilliant understanding of human nature.

As magical and nostalgic as this image is, it’s not a good representation of the real Tarot. Both when Tarot began, and how it is used in modern times.

The World’s Best Tarot Readers All Know This…

The Major Arcana cards are linked to the human psyche, the subconscious realms. They also represent archetypes used in psychology and common themes that crop up in everyone’s journey through life. They could describe every person on the planet… every aspect of each and every one of us.

Isn’t that incredible?

The Minor Arcana represent the different realms of life - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

When you look at tarot a little differently, you begin to see that it has the potential to be an excellent coaching tool. Not a game, or a way of predicting possible futures, but a means to help clients change their own lives, by accessing insights that are hidden deep in their own psyche.

Become an Excellent Tarot Reader - Tip 1

To be an excellent Tarot reader, you need to have a good grasp of human nature - just like the fortune tellers of old did.

Your experiences, difficulties and life lessons are incredibly valuable.

An excellent Tarot reader would never tell a client what to do… but their life experiences would help inform them about what their client might be going through.

That’s why when students new to Tarot want to learn and excel, I recommend that they start journaling. Journaling gives them access to their own minds on a much deeper level. This inner contemplation allows insights which will not only help themselves to heal but to help others to heal too.

Become an Excellent Tarot Reader - Tip 2

To be an excellent Tarot reader, you need to have a good grasp of… the Tarot!

A little obvious maybe, but knowing the Tarot card meanings so well that you don’t have to think about it is a given standard to uphold before you do this work professionally. Learning the Tarot card meanings doesn’t have to be difficult… or take a long time.

The methods I teach my students to learn the card meanings are fast and help them to get the meanings to stick in their minds. Gone are the days of learning 78 different meanings and hundreds of different card combinations.

Once you have learnt the Tarot card meanings, practise! Then practise some more. Practise on anyone that will let you and don’t worry about getting things wrong. Remember the Tarot is a life coach, not a divination tool. Because you are helping people access their own inner wisdom, you can’t really make any huge mistakes.

Become an Excellent Tarot Reader - Tip 3

To be an excellent Tarot reader, you need to work towards excellence… always.

Yes, that’s right. Never stop learning or else complacency sets in. This is a fast way to lose clients, accuracy and passion for Tarot.

Develop your Tarot reading skills, develop your customer care skills, develop your intuition, develop your compassion, and develop your full potential as a Tarot card reader.

Every single career path in life requires continual growth. Those at the top of their game have the willingness to be the best.

In Tarot, luckily, ‘the best’ requires skills like listening, understanding and compassion along with the skill of reading the cards. This way, you’ll be fully equipped to guide other people out of difficult places.
