What Does it Mean When Tarot Cards Fly Out?

Are you a Tarot reader? If so, I’m sure you’ve asked yourself this question.

It is a hot topic of debate, and everyone seems to have a different opinion.

These Tarot cards are known as “jumpers”, and they tend to fall out of the Tarot deck and onto the table mid-shuffle.

Should You Read Tarot Cards That Jump Out?

If you’re a professional Tarot reader, you’re going to sit in one of two camps:

  1. Tarot cards that fly out are something to take very seriously.

  2. Tarot cards that fly out should be put back in the pack and ignored.

Are Flying Tarot Cards Messages From The Universe?

In my experience, I’m afraid not. Well, not usually. I’ve found that when Tarot cards fly out, it’s usually because the Tarot reader is:

  • Tired, or not able to concentrate.

  • Inexperienced at shuffling.

Luckily, both of these are easy to fix.

I’m a fan of shuffling the Tarot cards and either splitting the deck or asking my client to choose their own cards. For me, the interpretation of the cards doesn’t begin at the shuffle. I find the most value in having the cards laid out in front of me. The reason is that the Tarot is a complete system in itself, and it works in such a way that it will always show you the right cards to shed light on your client’s question.

You could do three readings for the same client, on the same day, asking the same question, and you’ll get different Tarot cards pointing to the exact same themes cropping up in that client’s life. If you’re in any of my Masterclasses, you’ll have seen me demo this.

Another reason I don’t usually pay attention when cards fall out of the Tarot deck is that interpreting Tarot cards accurately is done using your intuition, which you can develop and strengthen. This means it’s not necessarily important which card you have in front of you, but how your intuition is being triggered to interpret it. This is particularly relevant for more experienced Tarot readers and those working at a higher level.  The meanings become less literal as you develop your mastery.

Do Professional Tarot Readers Pay Attention to Cards That Jump Out?

As a Tarot reader, it’s completely up to you how you do your Tarot readings. I advise my students to eliminate the other factors that may be causing these jumpers first.

Look, if spirit wants to get a significant message to you, one which will best help your client, they will do this through the medium of your intuition. It’s less likely that physical events like flying Tarot cards will be down to spirit communication.

Here’s why… I’ve noticed over the years that the more Tarot readers practice their shuffling technique, the fewer jumpers they experience.

Having said that, if a Tarot card jumps out in a very odd way, and you’re sure it’s trying to get your attention, then do take note… it may be relevant to your Tarot reading. At the very least, it may be something to consider, or it may confirm a theme that needs to be emphasised more in your reading.

If your intuition is screaming “This is important”, then it probably is.

What to do When Tarot Cards Fly Out

If you’re experiencing Tarot cards flying out regularly, I’d do the following things:

First, make sure you feel grounded and calm, and you’re physically and mentally ready to do a Tarot reading. You may wish to take some deep breaths or do a short meditation before your client arrives.

This will ensure your intuition is switched on, and your analytical mind is switched off. This way, you’ll be in the best state to interpret any messages the Tarot delivers.

Second, make sure you’re focused when you shuffle the Tarot cards. Keep your eyes on what you are doing and make sure your mind isn’t wandering off while you're shuffling the deck. This will prevent accidental jumpers from flying out.

Third, listen to your intuition when reading the Tarot cards that you have placed in front of you. Use your knowledge of the Tarot card meanings, paired with your gifts, to interpret the messages shown by the cards.

Learning how to read Tarot cards is so rewarding, and many of my students go on to build fulfilling careers using their new skills. I teach these skills from a very grounded place. If you would like to learn my methods, please feel free to explore my Tarot Academies.
