Some people struggle to learn the meanings of the Minor Arcana cards. In these blogs, I hope to help you get to grips with them and provide some useful coaching questions you can use to guide your clients.
IF A 3 COMES UP IN A TAROT READING …
A Three Tarot card is quite easy to remember if you think of a way to link the number three to creativity.
Perhaps imagine a painter’s brushstroke in the shape of a ‘3’.
Most of the time, a three showing up in a reading is a positive thing - except for the Three of Swords… I’ll get on to that later!
For the most part, Threes are creative. They’re about working with others and making or celebrating breakthroughs.

Right, let’s get this negative 3 out of the way then!
THREE OF SWORDS TAROT MEANING
If you get a Three of Swords in a card spread, it can mean that your client might be feeling a sense of sorrow.
Perhaps it’s a recent heartbreak or a betrayal at work.
As the Swords represent thinking, the Three of Swords shows that negative thoughts are lurking in your client’s mind.
A good coaching question for this card would be:
“What needs are not being met, and how can you meet them yourself?”
You can then help your client make an action plan to lift them out of their sorrow.
THREE OF CUPS TAROT MEANING
Much more positive, the Three of Cups is a card of true creativity - creativity from the heart.
It also represents friendships and celebrations, both very heartwarming too!
A good coaching question for this card would be:
“What does your heart want to create?”
Perhaps your client would like to make some new friends, pursue a creative business idea or even take up a creative fun hobby.
THREE OF PENTACLES TAROT MEANING
On a similar theme, the Three of Pentacles represents teamwork and collaborating with others to create something physical or profitable. It’s not necessarily a heart-based project, but it’s still worthwhile and important.
A good coaching question for this card would be:
“Who has skills which complement mine, and how can we reach a common goal together?”
THREE OF WANDS TAROT MEANING
This is another creative card - creative expansion.
If your client is looking into the future, thinking of ways they can expand their life and feel more fulfilled, this card might show up.
It’s an opportunity for your client to become more of a visionary and a leader in their own life.
A good coaching question for this card would be:
“How can I connect more fully to my big life vision?”
I hope this mini tutorial helps you to remember the ‘3’ Tarot cards.
